Thank You for Listening chronicles Joshua Ray Walker’s journey as he makes East Dallas country music while battling third-generation cancer and planning his return to the Grand Ole Opry — the mecca of country music.
Drawing inspiration from enchanting surrealism with a touch of Dolly Parton flair, this film weaves together personal, creative, and cellular elements in a visually captivating exploration of hope and healing.
Thank You for Listening began by chance. Gene met Josh on a plane — two strangers sharing a conversation that felt unusually unguarded. Josh spoke about music, about Texas, about writing songs that carried memory in their bones. His ease and warmth stayed with Gene long after they landed. What neither of them knew then was how quickly the stakes of his story would rise.
Not long after, Josh was diagnosed with third-generation cancer. The diagnosis did not interrupt his creative life. It intensified it. Suddenly, every song, every plan, every quiet moment carried weight. This film was born inside that window — as Josh made music while his life was quite literally on the line.
As chemotherapy began, the physical toll made traditional production impossible. So we built something different — a set inside Gene’s mother’s house that served as both sanctuary and stage. No modern technologies. No outside noise. A place where memory, comfort, and imagination could coexist.

The film really began on a plane. Gene saw Josh on a flight to Europe, introduced himself, and by the time they landed, had completely fallen in love with him as both an artist and a person. His honesty, humor, and perspective on storytelling were so disarming. What struck them immediately was that Josh didn’t just write songs — he lived inside them.
Around that same time, Gene met co-director Bob Ray at SXSW. There was an immediate creative shorthand between them. Once Josh began undergoing chemo, they built a set in Gene’s mother’s attic in Texas so Josh could continue filming without exposure during treatment. That intimate space became a sanctuary — and shaped every frame of the film.
Theatrical Run — The film ran for one week at Arena Cinelounge Sunset in Hollywood, California, its Academy Award–qualifying theatrical run.
